Cultivating Biodiversity: An Interactive eLearning Series for Farmers
Introduction
Southern Cross University (SCU) engaged Emergent Learning to develop a series of four eLearning modules designed to enhance the knowledge of Australian farmers on biodiversity. These modules aimed to provide practical, research-based insights into sustainable farming practices that support soil health and ecosystem resilience. The project was part of SCU’s broader initiative to promote regenerative agriculture through accessible and high-quality digital learning experiences.

Objectives
The primary objective was to develop four 30-minute eLearning modules covering key biodiversity-related topics:
Multispecies cover crops – exploring the benefits of diverse crop rotations for soil and plant health.
The effects of farm management on soil organic carbon – examining how different agricultural practices impact soil carbon levels.
Integration of biochar into regenerative agriculture practices – understanding the role of biochar in improving soil fertility and carbon sequestration.
Measurement of changes in soil organic carbon levels – providing practical guidance on assessing soil carbon changes over time.
Solutions
Emergent Learning developed the modules using Articulate Storyline, ensuring an interactive and engaging learning experience. The modules were designed with customised, interactive infographic-style layouts, making complex biodiversity concepts more accessible to learners. This approach supported deeper understanding by visually mapping relationships, processes, and key insights within each topic.
The solution included:
A structured course curriculum outlining key learning objectives.
Four highly visual, interactive eLearning modules that blended research-based content with engaging digital storytelling.
SCORM-compliant content, ensuring seamless integration into SCU’s learning platforms.
Supporting PowerPoint slides and assessments to reinforce learning and measure comprehension.
Outcome
The successful implementation of these eLearning modules provided SCU with a visually rich, interactive digital learning solution that met all brand and compliance requirements. The combination of infographic-style layouts and interactive elements enhanced learner engagement, making complex biodiversity concepts more intuitive and practical for Australian farmers.
